Europe Trip 2025 - Budapest

This was my second visit to Budapest (pop. 1.7m). Both were too short.

I always thought of Budapest as a city much bigger than Warsaw, but checking the numbers now, Warsaw is a bit bigger (pop. 1.8m) and the metro area population and density are practically the same: 3.3m and ~500/km2.

Here are some photos taken one rainy early October morning:

A beautiful bridge and a bike lane below.

Budapest was famous for the longest trams in the world (56m), but was overtaken by Mannheim

The parliament building on the eastern bank of Danube.

Comedy Theatre of Budapest (Hungarian: Vígszínház)

The shape of tree fencing takes into account the angled car parking.

This was a sandy dog toilet.

Trees make everything look better (cars do the opposite).

A few buildings I saw needed repairs.

Majestic entrance.

Lightly protected bike lane.

Detective Columbo and his dog.

Budapest Nyugati train station, opened in 1877. A funny thing: the word "nyugati" means western, but the station is in Pest - the eastern part of Buda-Pest, and the international trains go north to Bratislava in  Slovakia, Brno in Czechia, and Warsaw in Poland.

The building is beautiful, even in rain.

My train to Warsaw on the left.

Hungarian railways need investment.
